Government ships are on their way to evacuate residents from Papua New Guinea's Manam Island, after its volcano erupted on Saturday.

The Madang Governor, Peter Yama, says troops are being deployed to help with the emergency response.

The volcano, which is one of the country's most active, erupted in the early hours of Saturday, sending an ash cloud some 15 kilometres into the air.

A resident told EMTV that several houses have collapsed under the weight of the ash fall, while others have been consumed by lava flow.

No casualties have been reported.
