Fiji has launched minimum standards for aged care facilities in the country.

The Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa said Fijians are living longer and more are living with disabilities which means they're more likely to require help with day-to-day living.

Ms Vuniwaqa said the new national standards are aimed at ensuring older people's rights are protected.

She said the standards will ensure aged care facility operators have the required knowledge, skills and competencies needed to provide comprehensive quality services.

Ms Vuniwaqa's ministry currently works in partnership with nine aged care facilities around the country which have 223 residents.
