Cambpell carded a second round six-under par 66 to be 11-under for the tournament, four strokes clear of Australia's Andrew Dodt.

Natadola Bay's trademark windy conditions did not eventuate during the leader's round and Campbell said he adapted well to the clean air.

"I think it was one of the first times I've ever played it in these kind of conditions so the game plan actually changed a little bit. You were able to go at a few flags," he said.

"The wind was actually in the total opposite direction. There was a couple holes hitting two iron instead of driver. I adapted really well today, which I think was the key."

Four time major winner Ernie Els caught fire on the back nine with three birdies and an eagle, signing for second round 70 and tie for 20th at two-under for the tournament.

Sam Lee was the best of the locals at three-under for the tournament following rounds of 70 and 71, while the host Vijay Singh made the cut on the number at four-over par with a second round 72.
