The Fiji Times reports the parties say someone needs to be held accountable for raising the level of the Wainisavulevu weir in Monasavu without a proper environmental impact assessment.

The Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry said there had been a cover-up.

He said lip service was given to climate change and environmental issues in Fiji but in practice Fiji was allowing its own natural ecosystems to be destroyed through indiscriminate practices.

Sodelpa's Lynda Tabuya said the development had destroyed the spiritual homeland of iTaukei landowners of the area.

Unity Fiji leader Savenaca Narube said the entire nation was in disbelief at the environmental disaster at Monasavu.

Energy Fiji says it acted within the law and followed all processes required of it by the government before raising the weir in 2015.
