Fiji's Consumer Council says it has received complaints that a 20 cent plastic bag levy has been charged for months by some retailers despite the measure only officially coming into effect on Wednesday.

Project Manager Bindula Devi called on traders to take responsibility and ensure they did not charge the levy prematurely.
Ms Devi said consumers were also reminded to check their receipts and ensure they were charged the correct plastic bag levy.
FBC news reported that since the announcment of the levy last year, the Consumer Council has recorded 76 related complaints.
