New Caledonia teens jailed over motorbike death

12:51 pm on 26 July 2018

Two teenagers in New Caledonia have been given jail sentences for causing the fatal accident of a woman motorcyclist near Noumea last year.

The woman crashed near St Louis on her way home from work in March 2017.

Investigations established weeks later that four teenagers intent on stealing her bike triggered her fall.

Two of the accused are yet to be sentenced, with one of them charged with failing to provide assistance.

The sentenced pair received jail terms of six and seven years.

Media reports said the sentencing took place behind closed doors but more than a hundred people were outside the court building awaiting the verdict.

The death prompted concerned citizens to form the Collective Against Insecurity in New Caledonia.

There was intense debate on social media over whether the fall on a troubled stretch of the main road near St Louis was an accident or the result of foul play.

The road, which has been the scene of unrest, has repeatedly closed, disrupting the lives of thousands.
