Vanuatu's minister responsible for co-operatives has called on more than 300 co-operative societies throughout the country to develop greater economic self reliance.

Bob Loughman was appointed Vanuatu's deputy prime minister following the resignation of Joe Natuman.

Bob Loughman made the call during celebrations of International Co-operatives Day in Port Vila last week.

Mr Loughman said the leaders of Vanuatu's independence struggle successfully mobilised the people in 1980 and he says the timing is right for all co-operatives to rally in the same spirit with the goal being economic self reliance.

He linked the call to Vanuatu being set to graduate from Least Developed Country status in 2020.
