An American Samoan playing for the Denver Broncos American football team has pledged $US640 thousand US to fund a new health centre in Tafuna.

Domata Peko and his wife Anna were welcomed to the territory last week when Mr Peko was given the honorary matai title Toomata.

The Hope Mission health clinic is planned for Lions Park.

Bishop Vaifanua Mulitauaopele said construction of the health center is expected to begin in the early part of next month

Hope Mission founder Stuart Hamilton told KHJ News last week, that medical personnel who work at the mission's centres in South Carolina would come to American Samoa as part of their rotation.

He said this would ensure that the Tafuna centre was staffed by US certified doctors and nurses.
