The Pacific Games Council has opted to reopen the bid process after American Samoa and Niue failed to meet requirements.

Both countries expressed an interest in hosting the games during the multi-sport event in Vanuatu last year.

The Fiji Times reports they were then invited to formally submit bids.

The council's chief executive, Andrew Minogue, said the body decided unanimously the bids did not comply with charter requirements.

Niue has never hosted the quadrennial event which is a scaled-down version of the Pacific Games.

American Samoa held the event in 1997.
