Fiji's Chaudhry expected to appeal election ineligibility

4:45 pm on 19 June 2018

Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry is expected to file an appeal next week in relation to his application to contest this year's general election.

FBC News reported an appeal was likely after a High Court judge ruled last week he did not have jurisdiction in the case.

Justice Kamal Kumar said questions of eligibility were vested in the Supervisor of Elections and Electoral Commission and were not subject to court review.

Mr Chaudhry, a former prime minister who was convicted of offences under the Exchange Control Act in 2014, has been ruled ineligible to contest the 2018 vote.
