FBC News reported Ratu Epenisa and others were held overnight on Friday and released the next day.

The police and armed soldiers arrived on Bau early on Friday to head off a formal ceremony to install Ratu Epenisa in the paramount role of Vunivalu of Bau.

The Native Land Commission instructed the police to stop the ceremony because of an ongoing dispute over who should take the title.

Concerns were raised that armed soldiers were also involved in Ratu Epenisa's arrest.

Fiji's police chief later said the soldiers were there in case of a confrontation with "traditionally armed warriors".
