1:44 pm on 24 May 2018

The 2018 session of Tonga's Parliament will have a state opening today.

Matangi Tonga reports King Tupou VI will officiate the state opening with a march of local secondary school students also expected to mark the occasion.

The 125-year-old building that accommodated the Legislature in central Nuku'alofa was demolished by severe Cyclone Gita in February.

It means that parliament is now meeting at the Tonga National Cultural Centre.
