The police say a 59-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday after 1.9 kilogrammes of methamphetamine was seized from him in the departure area.

Cash in various currencies to the value of around US$5000 was also seized.

Acting chief superintendent Tevita Vailea says the police believe the suspect was trying to smuggle the drugs to New Zealand.

He says methamphetamine and other illicit drugs are causing significant harm to Tonga's communities.
