Sport: Fiji top World Sevens Series after Singapore success

7:31 am on 30 April 2018

Fiji scored a last gasp try to beat Australia in the final of the Singapore Sevens and take the overall lead in the World Series.

A converted try put Australia in front with a minute to play but a knock-on from the restart gave Fiji one final chance and they took it, with Alosio Sovita Naduva completing a length of the field effort to seal a dramatic 28-22 victory.

Captain Jerry Tuwai was proud of the way his team responded after losing at the Commonwealth Games two weeks ago.

"I'm speechless. Australia are a very good side and took us to the wire," he said.

"We gave everything for this final."

"Winning this tournament will boost our morale going to London and Paris.

Tuwai added: "To all the people in the stadium, thank you very much for the support and back home thank you very much for your prayers, support and belief in this young team."

"Our main aim this year was the Commonwealth but it doesn't go our way and our second aim was the World Series, so winning this tournament will boost our morale going to London and Paris."

It's Fiji's third straight title on the World Series, following victories in Vancouver and Hong Kong, and puts them four points clear of the Blitzboks in the overall standings with two tournaments left to play.

Head coach Gareth Baber was full of praise for his players.

"When they're in there in the 14 minutes I get a little bit to say at half-time but essentially it's down to all their training, all their work back in Fiji," he said.

"It's habitual. What you do on the field is down to your training and when you're under pressure that's how they train and sometimes as a coach you're biting your nails a little bit but I've got to go with that because that's what they can produce."

"We're confident in the way that we're playing. We don't play like anybody else which is of benefit to us because it's difficult to analyse - how do you stop Fiji playing?

"But we've got to bear in mind we've got a target on our backs now. We've got to keep playing the way we are at the moment, we've got to look after the players, they've got to look after themselves and look to capitalise on these last two tournaments in Paris and London."

Meanwhile Samoa moved up to ninth in the overall standings after a sixth place finish.

After reaching the Cup quarter finals for the third time this season the Manu 7s were pipped 12-5 by England.

Sir Gordon Tietjen's side bounced back to beat Spain 24-7 before a 36-17 defeat by New Zealand in the fifth place playoff.
