PNG tribal clash kills two

Two people have been killed and a secondary school has been burnt down in a tribal clash over a disputed principal position in the Ialibu District of Papua New Guinea's Southern Highlands.

The incident started late on Tuesday afternoon at Ialibu station after a mediation ceremony was held between two teachers who were contesting the vacant position of principal at Ialibu secondary school.

However, the mediation was not satisfactory to both parties, and supporters of the two teachers started a fight which claimed the lives of two men and resulted in the burning down of classrooms which cater for almost 1000 students.

Police later intervened but were powerless to stop the fighting.
