New Zealand non-government organisations working in aid and development are taking a new approach to their fundraising.
A survey by their umbrella agency, the Council for International Development, called the 'Challenge of Change' makes clear that NGOs are less trusted today than a year ago.
This is reflected in a decline in the money the public is prepared to give NGOs.
The executive director of CID Josie Pagani said the public was still the mainstay of funding for NGOs but more and more people donated directly to groups within the nation needing the aid.
She said people, particularly millennials, just wanted a closer relationship.
"So what we are finding from the survey is that the New Zealand based NGO is very aware of this and is going, OK so let's adapt the way that we work. So we might partner more directly with a local NGO in country, whether it be in the Pacific, whether it be in Syria or South Sudan and we'll do a better story of telling how we relate and how we work with the local partner," she said.
