A social media campaign this month aims to promote gender equality by highlighting stories of individual men and women from the Pacific.

The #Champions4Equality includes stories from local politicians, teachers, journalists and farmers.

Salma Elhagyousif of the United Nations Development Programme said the campaign also helped with other sustainable development goals.

"It's not just a women issue. It's really a society or a community issue because societies cannot develop or progress without women having their full rights and enjoying equal opportunities as men. A society cannot develop if half its members are left behind do not have equal opportunities and are not able to realise their full potential."
