This follows prolonged financial difficulties for the publication which is the only local daily newspaper for sale.

Workers had been fearing job losses and launched a strike last month after being repeatedly paid late.

The strikers had also been decrying poor working conditions and a failure to adhere to the terms of a settlement that ended the last strike last year.

The company RLD has now six months to find a solution to avoid liquidation.

Four years ago, the territory's oldest newspaper Nouvelles de Tahiti ceased publication after 57 years.

However, there is a free daily in French Polynesia - Tahiti-infos.
