French Polynesia's criminal court has jailed a 37-year-old local for four years for smuggling methamphetamine.

The man was detained on arrival at the international airport from the US last week and upon questioning admitted carrying capsules of the banned drug in his body.

He was taken to hospital for a scan after which it was established that he carried 64 grams.

The drug was estimated to be worth $US64,000.

In court, he claimed to be of royal Tahitian descent and refused to recognise the French state's authority to try him.

There has been a series of arrests in Tahiti of people found to be trying to smuggle the drug into the territory.
