Sir Bernard was PNG's second longest serving judge, with 25 years of service.

Sir Bernard was arrested by anti-fraud police in 2016 and charged with judicial corruption.

The charge related to a payment which the judge allegedly received from someone at the centre of fraud allegations, legal matters around which he was then deliberating.

The case against him was later dismissed on procedural grounds, however the Ombudsman Commission then referred Sir Bernard to the public prosecutor.

According to PNG's Justice Minister Davis Stevens, Sir Bernard's resignation now effectively terminates formal investigations into allegations of misconduct against him.
