Air Caledonie International, or Aircalin, is hoping its first charter flight between the Chinese city of Hangzhou and Noumea will be the start of a regular service and help to boost the number of Chinese tourists to the territory.

260 tourists will board the flight in the south eastern Chinese city on February 17, staying nearly a week.

New Caledonia's economy is dominated by nickel mining and tourism has been struggling to take off but the territory is aiming to welcome 6000 Chinese tourists by 2025, up from just under 400 in 2016.

The Chinese authorities granted New Caledonia approved destination status last October, allowing tourists from China to add the archipelago to their holiday itineraries.
