Guam's promotion hopes in the Davis Cup tennis competition suffered a major blow as they were beaten 2-1 by Bahrain in their penultimate pool match in Asia/Oceania Zone Group Four.

Christopher Cajigan and Daniel Llarenas were both beaten in straight sets before Mason Caldwell and Jean Pierre Huynh combined for a consolation 6-3, 7-5 win in the doubles.

Singapore have secured top spot in Pool B with a match to spare, with Bahrain, Guam and Mongolia all still a chance of joining them in the semifinals.

Second placed Bahrain will advance with victory over Singapore in today's final round.

If they lose and Guam defeats bottom placed Tajikistan Bahrain will still progress after beating the US territory head to head.

But if Mongolia can also beat Turkmenistan and make it three teams tied on three wins then Guam has a strong chance to advance, with the tiebreaker determined first by which team has won the most matches.
