An investigation in French Polynesia into a smuggling and distribution network of methamphetamine has been completed.

La Depeche de Tahiti says a total of 26 people are implicated, of whom ten are in custody as the prosecution is finalising the charges.

The paper reports that the central figure is a tour guide, dubbed Kikilove, who allegedly used travellers from the United States to unwittingly import the banned drug.

One of the suspects is an airport employee.

21 kilogrammes of the drug has been seized and according to the probe four kilogrammes had earlier been sold for $US4 million.

The paper says the main suspect devised a complex system which allowed the methamphematine crystals to remain undected when bags were x-rayed.

If found guilty, the perpatrators could be jailed for up to ten years.
