The incident dates back to the beginning of November when a police patrol was following a car near La Foa.

At the time the man was a passenger in the car who opened a window, pulled out a rifle and fired at the police car, hitting its front.

Nobody was injured.

According to the Nouvelles Caledoniennes, the 20-year-old told the court that he feared having to go back to jail after having been released only months earlier.

The car was driven into the bush near Kouaoua where it was set alight, allowing its occupants to escape.
