The Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has announced a ban on the temporary release of prisoners until procedures are reviewed.

Mr O'Neill's ban includes a halt on all day temporary release of prisoners.

The Post Courier reports that the ban takes effect immediately until stronger penalties are enacted for prisoners escaping custody.

Mr O'Neill had demanded an explanation from Correctional Services as to why six prisoners were released from prison in Lorengau on Sunday who then subsequently escape.

Earlier a rape convict taunted the prison system on social media while out on medical release for almost seven months.

Mr O'Neill said the government would be strict with control on genuine medical prisoners seeking assistance outside of prison.

He also warned of stronger penalties for people who aid escaped prisoners

He said while there will be much more stringent controls, if a prisoner is genuinely in need of medical care, every effort will be made to ensure they are treated.

Meanwhile Mr O'Neill had also demanded an explanation from Correctional Services as to why six prisoners were released from prison in Lorengau on Sunday who then subsequently escape.
