Reports have emerged that a non-elected Tongan businessman has been chosen by Prime Minister 'Akilisi Pohiva to be his Minister of Labour and Commerce.

The Constitution states that the Prime Minister has the option of selecting up to four cabinet ministers from outside of Parliament.

Kaniva News reports that Tonga Broadcasting Commission Chairman, Tu'i Uata, has been submitted as a new minister by Mr Pohiva.

It also said Mr Pohiva had chosen Semisi Sika as his Deputy Prime Minister.

The cabinet appointments have been given to King Tupou VI for his official and required approval.

Despite Mr Pohiva's Democratic party taking 14 seats in November's election, he had also reportedly chosen to re-select Noble Representative Lord Ma'afu as his Minister of Land and Survey.

The Ministry of Defence, a portfolio the former military commander held in the last Pohiva government, has now moved under the control of the Prime Minister.

The Ministry of Custom and Revenues has been brought under the authority of the Minister of Police, Mateni Tapueluelu.
