A Russian businessman seeking to restore the Romanov Empire in Kiribati has been rebuffed in a separate attempt to do so in the Gambia.
The government in the Gambia said the Memorandum on Friendship and Cooperation produced by Anton Bakov was fake.

Mr Bakov, who heads Russia's Monarchist Party and is running for the Russian presidency in March, tabled the memorandum between the Romanov Empire and the Republic of the Gambia at a news conference in Yekaterinburg last month.
However, the Office of the President of the Gambia said it had not signed any memorandum.
Mr Bakov offered to pay $US60 million to build artificial islands within the Gambia's territorial waters to accommodate the revived Empire.
In February, Kiribati turned down Mr Bakov's bid to site his empire on uninhabited islands of the Line Group where he planned to invest $US350 million.
Mr Bakov is still hopeful the Kiribati project, on which he said he had spent about a million dollars so far, will go ahead.
