New Caledonia consolidate Mini Games lead

New Caledonia continues to set the overall pace at the Pacific Mini Games in Vanuatu, although medals were evenly shared on the first day of athletics competition.

Thier Washetine threw 43.54m to win gold in the men's para javelin, taking the French Territory's overall tally to 28 gold and 46 medals in all.

Malakai Kaiwalu claimed gold in the men's high jump with a leap of 2.06m as Fiji added four medals on the opening day of athletics to stay second overall, with 16 gold and 42 total medals.

Hosts Vanuatu kicked off the the second week of competition with Simon Charley first home in the men's 10,000m, followed closely by compatriot Armon Napuat.

Valentine Hello added another home victory in the women's 800m, while Alex Beddoes took out the men's event to earn the Cook Islands' first gold medal of the Mini Games.

Sharon Firisua led home a Solomon Islands 1-2 in the women's 10,000m, ahead of Dianah Matekali.

Papua New Guinea's Rellie Kaputin claimed gold in the women's long jump while Mowen Boino took out the men's 400m hurdles.

Meanwhile Donny Uimaseve won gold for Samoa in the men's javelin and Tonga's Ata Maama Tu'utafaiva prevailed in the women's shot put.
