Defence force personnel in Fiji plant mangrove seedlings

Defence force personnel in Fiji have planted 5000 mangrove seedlings in Suva's foreshore to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Operations chief staff officer Major Lepani Damuni said over 120 troops from various units took part in the mangrove planting drive.

Dumani said the planting initiative was part of routine military activities within the community.

"This mangrove planting initiative was initiated by a directive from Commander RFMF Rear Admiral Viliame Naupoto, as part of routine military activities. The force will conclude the month with community work as our contribution in the combat and mitigation of the adverse effects of climate change to our shores," he said.

Forestry officer Waisea Bolatolu from the Ministry of Forestry, said he is very pleased with the planting and the initiative shown by the defence force.
