The nursing profession was first established on island in 1917, and the celebration began with a march and the Prime Minister, Tuila'epa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi, in his speech reminded nurses to consider if reaching the centenary of the profession would improve their service.

Tuila'epa also promised the government will construct a new hall for the nursing association in the next financial year.

But he asked the Minister of Health, Tuitama Talalelei Tuitama, to make sure the government wouldn't take any blame if the promise isn't met.
