Death prompts calls for improved road safety in Vanuatu

The death of a toddler after being hit by a bus on a Port Vila street has prompted the mayor of the Vanuatu capital to call for speeding drivers to be mindful of pedestrians.

Ulrich Sumptoh also wanted the government to install barriers and speed limit signs.

The tragedy on the outskirts of Port Vila prompted a mob to attack the bus driver who had to be rescued by police.

Our correspondent in Port Vila said eye witnesses were blaming the child's mother.

They claimed the woman wasn't watching over her baby because she and other women were busy playing cards for money.
