The Papua New Guinea police commissioner Gari Baki has issued a directive that staff using hire vehicles have to return them by the end of this month.

In a statement Mr Baki said this instruction was made in light of the government's financial plight.

He said it was vital that urgent measures were taken to reduce costs.

Mr Baki said he saw no need to hire vehicles unless he himself had been personally convinced of an urgent need.

The PNG national budget for 2018 was expected to cut spending to many government departments.
