A protest march is planned in Tahiti to coincide with Saturday's march in the Marquesas Islands against plans to expand large-scale fishing in French Polynesia.

Earlier this month, hundreds of people in Hiva Oa in the Marquesas marched against plans to bring in 72 tuna fishing boats to their area.

Opponents said they wanted to protect their fisheries against unsustainable exploitation and keep their tourism and way of life.

One of their representatives says Marquesas Islanders living in Tahiti will take to the streets and plan a march to the French High Commission.

Earlier this month, several fishermen in the Marquesas confronted a tuna vessel from Tahiti and delayed its docking.
