There are hopes a breadfruit summit in Samoa will lead to greater commerical consumption of the crop.

Samoa's minister of agriculture Lopao'o Natanielu Mu'a said breadfruit is an abundant, subsistence cop in Pacifc and Carribean islands with a similar cultural significance to coconut.

He said in terms of value adding, there had been considerable efforts to develop the most efficient way of commercially processing the fruit into flour to make products such as breadfruit chips.

The minister said he expected the summit to consolidate and bring to the mainstream product development efforts, in order to up-scale and commercialise breadfruit into markets.

"In order to do this, there is a need to develop the standard for some of the products," he told the summit.
