Fiji council calls for more women in parliament

Fiji's National Council of Women is calling for special measures to get more women elected to parliament.

The general secretary said the current system was unfair towards women and the council said if provisions were made to set aside seats for women this should be a permanent change.

Fay Volatabu said eight women in parliament is not enough and the council is wo rking to support women who wish to contest the next election in 2018.

FBC reports the council launched a plan this week to encourage more Fiji women to take up leadership roles.
