Fiji hikes minimum wage

7:44 am on 13 September 2017

Fiji's government will implement - and enforce - an increased minimum wage from the end of this month, it says.

From the 30th of September, the country's minimum wage will increase to FJ$2.68 - or about US$1.34.

The current minimum wage is FJ$2.32.

Employment minister Jone Usamate said the new minimum wage - which was promised in the 2017 budget - would benefit more than 150,000 marginalised workers in the informal sector.

He said his ministry would be touring the country to explain the new wage and employment laws, and a team of enforcement officers would be employed for when the change kicked in.
