A further 73 containers have been taken off the ship Kea Trader which has been stuck on a reef off New Caledonia since July.

The public broadcaster says more than 200 containers have been removed so far and once 300 have been lifted off the ship, attempts will be made to refloat it.

Three weeks ago, more than half a million litres of fuel were pumped out of its tanks, averting the risk of a spillage.

The brand new vessel ran onto the Durand Reef near Mare while sailing from Papeete to Noumea in circumstances which have not been explained yet.
