Former court president charged with stealing documents

A former French Polynesian court president is due to appear in the criminal court in Tahiti next week on charges of stealing historic documents.

Tahiti Nui TV reported that Henri Renaud de la Faverie is alleged to have taken royal ordonances of Queen Pomare from the archives in Tahiti.

The TV report said the case emanated from a complaint by the archive that precious documents had gone missing.

Investigators found them with in France with a dealer in precious manuscripts.

Mr Renaud de la Faverie served in Papeete from the mid-1980s before becoming an advisor of the then president Gaston Flosse.

If found guilty, he could be jailed for up to three years and fined more than $US50000.
