The Governor of the Northern Marianas Ralph Torres has assured residents that there continues to be no indication of an imminent threat from North Korea.

Pyongyang fired missiles over northeast Japan on Wednesday and last month threatened to target waters near Guam.

The Northern Marianas main island of Saipan is just 215 kilometers away from Guam, home to three US military bases.

Mr Torres said the CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management agency remains in close contact with Guam and military partners.

He said Wednesday's missile launch was detected and determined not to be a threat.
