Papua New Guinea finished with a perfect record at the East Asia-Pacific Qualifier for the Under 19 Cricket World Cup, after their final match against Vanuatu in Apia was washed out without a ball bowled.

Unseasonal rain in the Samoan capital forced the abandonment of the match on the reserve day after two days of wet weather.

The washout means the Garamuts finished with five wins from five matches and have qualified for the January's World Cup in New Zealand.

All three other teams finished with two wins each meaning final placings came down to net run rate.

Vanuatu pipped Fiji for second position, who finished a disappointing third after they won the previous qualifier in 2015.

Despite ending the competition in last place Samoa were delighted after recording their first ever victories at international under 19 level.

PNG opener Igo Mahuru picked up the batting award after hitting 170 runs at an average of 42.50.

Fiji's Jack Charters was named best bowler after snaring 15 wickets throughout the tournament and also the overall player of the tournament.

Meanwhile the schedule for the World Cup was unveiled this week with Papua New Guinea drawn in Group B, alongside India, Australia and Zimbabwe.
