After the introduction of street names, the Northern Marianas island of Saipan is now considering giving numbers to houses.

The island brought in street names in 2012 and Saipan's Mayor's Office said it was now working on a numbering system, according to special assistant Henry Hofschneider.

Mr Hofschneider said the system, which would be based on one from the US, would help emergency services and with the distribution of mail.

Saipan mayor David Apatang said before 2012 the lack of street names meant paramedics struggled to find the exact location of a person in trouble.

The street names followed different themes for different villages.

Mr Hofschneider said a numbering system would also enable people to conveniently find homes and serve as a guide for census work.
