Fiji's opposition leader is calling for special protection of endangered fish species which are commonly hunted.

The species - 'kawakawa' and 'donu' - are widely embraced as favourites to locals around Fiji.

But Ro Teimumu Kepa said the species were threatened, and everyone needs to make an effort to preserve them - especially in breeding season.

She called for greater official protection, and for traditional leaders to help monitor fishing grounds.
