A large container ship has run onto a reef off New Caledonia.

The Kea Trader hit the Durand Reef which was about 100 kilometres southeast of the island of Mare.

The vessel, which was almost 200 metres long, was reportedly travelling at about 35 kilometres per hour when it crashed onto the reef.

None of the 18 crew on board was injured.

The authorities say the ship was double-hulled and there was no risk of any pollution.
