The Kea Trader hit the Durand Reef which is about 100 kilometres southeast of the island of Mare.

The vessel, which is almost 200 metres long, was reportedly travelling at about 35 kilometres per hour when it crashed onto the reef.

None of the 18 crew on board was injured.

The authorities say the ship is double-hulled and there is no risk of pollution.
