The Fiji Government says 193 children have been withdrawn from child labour situations and returned to school since the Child Labour Unit was set up in 2011.

The Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Mereseini Vuniwaqa, highlighted this yesterday to mark the World Day Against Child Labour Awareness Programme.

She said the government remains committed to achieving its set target in Sustainable Development Goal 8 to accelerate the eradication of child labour by 2025 and of forced labour, modern slavery and human trafficking by 2030.

Minister Vuniwaqa said this required a collaborative commitment from all stakeholders and civil society organisations.

The minimum legal working age in Fiji was 15 years.
