Iliesa Tanivula's side had missed out on the Cup quarter finals for the first time this season, after going winless on day one.

The Melanesians had let a 14-0 lead slip in their opening match against Ireland, conceding three tries in the last four minutes to go down 19-14.

They also led at halftime against Spain before losing 12-7 but managed a 24-all draw against Olympic and World Series champions Australia.

Fiji trailed Brazil 19-7 at halftime in their Challenge Trophy semi final before finishing strongly with three tries to set up a second meeting against Spain.

Fiji have slipped to fifth in the World Series standings, behind Russia, with one round remaining in France next month.
