The US Pacific islands of Guam, American Samoa, Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas, face a loss of nearly $US6-million based on current funding levels.

The White House proposes to cut American Samoa operations funding - which is the backbone of federal assistance for the territory - by $US1.2 million dollars.

The tiny Aunu'u is only 3 square kilometres with a population of 600 and features an expanse of red quicksand known as Pala Lake.

American Samoa's Congresswoman Aumua Amata Radewagen said it would be Congress which ultimately decided the funding levels.
