French Polynesian man killed in gun error

A man in French Polynesia has been shot dead by a policeman mistakenly firing his gun instead of his taser.

Vetearii Rupea was shot in the chest when the 46-year-old policeman fired his gun in a bid to break up a fight in Paea.

The policeman's lawyer said using a taser appeared to be the only way to stop the altercation between two drunk men but the policeman pulled the wrong weapon.

Police declined to comment and opened an investigation.
