The Solomon Star reports that Andrew Mua's comments came as about 1,000 people gathered in Honiara to protest against the murder of a Chinese couple a week ago.

Addressing the march through central Honiara, Mr Mua said brutal killings had affected many people in Solomon Islands.

He said the government had to introduce tougher penalties.

Solomon Islands abolished the death penalty in 1978.
