A former Fiji Police Criminal Investigations Director, Luke Rawalai, has been released on bail after being charged with corruption related offences.

He is accused of abuse of office and receiving a bribe.

It's alleged that in 2011 Mr Rawalai interfered with a police investigation and allegedly directed the Nadi Police CID team to charge a person without any evidence.

FBC News reports Mr Rawalai is also alleged to have interfered with the investigation conducted into an alleged forgery at the Central Division in 2014.

And he is alleged to have received almost $US4,000 without lawful authority.

The charges were brought by the Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption.

He is due back in court in two weeks to take a plea.
